Printoff are on to a Winner!
This September the Printoff team, with colleagues from our sister company Concept4, returned to Haydock Park Racecourse exactly 1 year after we’d attended to celebrate 40 years in business – a great achievement. Could we match the highs of the previous year though?
Certainly you’d struggle to find a better setting than Haydock Park, the famous Merseyside racecourse only 1 hour from our Head Office in Lancashire. We enjoyed Friday, day two of the Sprint Festival Meeting. Compared to the Saturday this, like our Concept4 website packages, is very competitively priced! We had access to some great facilities in the County Stand at a fraction of the premium Saturday prices.
The big issue earlier in the week was the weather. Our national obsession with the big yellow object in the sky wasn’t lost on our group. The forecast predicted heavy rain and plenty landed in the few days before race day. For some this meant a more detailed analysis of the formbook, looking for horses who’d shown good form on soft ground. For others this meant a tough decision around what shoes to wear! On the day the forecast was mixed with sunshine and heavy showers. As our coach started the short motorway journey to Haydock, rain came in biblical proportions, but our intrepid bunch were unphased – on our arrival many even took their biggest gamble of the day by leaving their coats on the coach! They were rewarded with a very pleasant afternoon with plenty of warm sunshine – all we needed were some winners!
Heading straight for the bar our Finance Director had a temporary surge of popularity as the first drinks of the day were on him. In a flash, race 1 was under starter’s orders – many of our team tasted early success with the victory of grey horse Amazing Michele. In the style of many actual horse races we then split into two smaller groups, with ongoing interaction between the two. One group was focused on sitting in the sun and soaking up the atmosphere near the parade ring, with plenty of liquid refreshment nearby. The other was based near the stands, closer to the racing action, ready to engage with our enemy for the day, the bookies! The early races rewarded those who had studied the form with largely predictable outcomes. Winners Pulitzer, Hyperfocus and Major Pusey were all popular amongst our team.
The later races proved harder to predict with disappointing fancied runners and much more unexpected results. The odd successful bet was struck but more on the basis of fancied names and colours than realistic form study. The Haydock crowd was particularly quiet when race 6 was won by 20-1 shot Nordic Combined – not even our talented creative team could come up with that one! The winner was ridden by the impressive Josephine Gordon who had three winners on the day. Thanks very much to Haydock Park and their team who put on a fantastic day of entertainment. The coach journey home saw much happy reflection on another great race day out along with requests to make this an annual event.
